She presented the list to Sakuta on October 16, which included doing multiple activities with her brother but notably included going back to school. Inspired by Mai during her press conference, Kaede drafted a list of goals for the year. After being remarked as cute, Kaede asked Mai if she could call her "Mai-san" and happily accepted Mai's subsequent offer to call her "Kaede-chan". On the night of June 28, Kaede tried on a dress gifted to her by Mai and showed it to the latter and her brother. Kaede ran off immediately after, as her shyness got the best of her. After her misunderstanding was cleared up, the girl introduced herself as Mai Sakurajima, prompting Kaede to introduce herself in return. Later that night, Kaede opened the door to her brother's room and found him shirtless in front of a girl she subsequently assumed to be a prostitute or scammer. Kaede suggested that he was aroused when he woke up, much to Sakuta's annoyance. On May 7, Kaede woke up in Sakuta Azusagawa's bed, but once her brother woke up, she was pushed away and was told to outgrow from crawling in it. As a result, she developed a phobia with strangers and spent most of her time at home.
Since then, she lived and behaved differently before her ordeal with Adolescence Syndrome. Kaede was declared the current "Kaede" and her former self was dubbed "Kaede-san" by Sakuta, which earned her tearful approval. After her brother received advice from Shoko Makinohara, she was gifted a pen and notebook and she was suggested to write her first name in hiragana (かえで) instead of kanji (花楓). Unfortunately, she had also developed amnesia as a way to separate herself from her experience with being harassed, which drove her mother (also forcing her father) to abandon her with Sakuta Azusagawa. As a result of Adolescence Syndrome, this caused her to suffer various physical injuries and she was only able to recover after she stopped using social media and going to school. Sometime during Kaede's time in middle school, she was a victim of online bullying and death threats.
She is a bit clingy to her brother, and tended to refer to herself in the third person. Kaede is soft-spoken, cheerful, loved pandas and had a strong will to go to school. She regains this personality after completing her list of goals.Įver since Kaede lost her memories and gained a new personality as a result of Adolescence Syndrome, she shut herself away from the internet and the outside world in general and developed a phobia of strangers, as shown when first meeting Mai Sakurajima. Kaede originally had a kind, yet cheeky personality which granted her little difficulty with social interaction. This is primarily due to her insecurity and paranoia as a result of her Adolescence Syndrome. She is normally shown wearing a panda hoodie with a pink shirt underneath. She also has square bangs and possesses large, pale brown eyes. Kaede has medium length, light brown hair tied to a loose ponytail at the front, and a strand of hair on both sides adorned with a tiny pink bow each.
